Kodak releases new Easyshare V570 Digital Camera

Features two lenses for wide angle and zoom

What’s hot?

Digital cameras are hot, that is for sure these days. However almost every month some new technology gets released that is a wonderful addition to the realm of digital cameras. Let’s take a look at Kodak’s new release that they are showing off at the CES show this week in Las Vegas.

The Kodak Easyshare V570 is the latest entry in the Easyshare line of digital cameras. Kodak has made these cameras to be as user friendly as possible by making it as easy to share the photos you take, as it is to take them in the first place.

The Easyshare V570 is a digicam that features two lenses, yes that is right two lenses. One is the standard version 3x zoom lens and the other is a 23mm fixed focal length ultra wide optic. This is sure to make this camera stand out from the crowd in the digital arena. No more backing up to get the whole scene in your shot. Use the wide-angle option and fill the frame from close up.

This is an ingenious approach to the problem of how to give the camera a wide angle and zoom capability at the same time. This can be done (Sony DSC-R1 and the Kodak Easyshare P880) but the optics in those cameras makes it a far bulkier affair. So instead of figuring that out or bulking up the camera with a larger than needed optics system the engineers at Kodak have provided two lenses in one camera. So do you have to move the lenses to choose? No they have given each lens its own sensor. That seems impractical and expensive until you realize that sensor prices are like the CPU prices in computers. They are falling steadily each month and the quality goes up each year.

Each lens has its own 5 mega pixel sensor and you just jump from one lens to the other in the user interface of the camera. Very simple stuff. However it does make the Easyshare V570 one of the more unique looking cameras on the market as a result.

Now with some wide-angle lenses you get what is called a barrel distortion effect. The V570 has a distortion correction that removes most but not all of that distortion in camera (causing a slightly longer processing time in the camera after the shot is taken. It is a nice feature and comes at a small price in terms of convenience.

Kodak has clearly broken some new ground in this area. No longer are their cameras just functional. Now they are entering the stylish arena formally owned by Sony and Canon in digital camera design.

It features a very bright 2.5 inch high resolution LCD screen and the camera take MPEG-4 video through either of the lenses so you can be a busy video creator with your camera on the go as well. Just like the rest of the Easyshare line of cameras you can utilize the software and docking stations that make it so easy to share, print. And organize your digital photos.

This new addition to the Kodak line of digital cameras looks to be a winner right out of the gate. It is set to be priced in the $399 range. This package has a winner set of features and the two-lens configuration could shake up the industry and cause other camera makers to sit up and take notice of this innovative design.
