The book side of digital photography

Now,digital photography is something you have to do in order to get better at taking great images. Reading a book is not first in the order of things. You have to get out there and push the shutter button and see your results. Of course with a digital camera you can experiment as much as you like. This page is dedicated to the books you can use as great idea starters, reference material, as well as tutorials for your learning growth in digital imaging.

We want to touch on a few of the books we have found to be useful in our digital imaging life. Some are new and some are older but they all have good value for you as the photographer.

We will also be bringing you reviews and advice on any new books on digital photography each month in our newsletter, The Flash Times. If you want to stay up to date with the latest digital camera information and tips be sure and subscribe today. (I hear there is a Free gift in it for you if you do...) Click here to sign up.

If you want to get some terrific tips on how to make some great digital photos there is a wonderful book called, 50 Fast Digital Camera Techniques by Gregory Georges, which I have found to be a good source of ideas for how to make the most of your digital camera. In this book you are given step-by-step guides to learn how to compose shots, use filters, choose exposures, create awesome shots of people, pets, and nature.

The book comes with all the images in the book on a special CD-ROM so you can follow along and see the images that are talked about in the guides. This book will take you from being an ordinary photography to being a crafted photographer.

Now if you are feeling a bit more advanced in your skill level as a digital photographer you might want to check out, Advanced Digital Photography by Tom Ang. Now in this book you are taken through the more creative side of digital imaging through image enhancement after the photo is taken. Mr. Ang shows you the software that can make it possible to develop and create stunning digital photography and the tricks to doing it right in this book.

One example I found particularly interesting was the chapter on advanced tone control that is where you manipulate the tonal properties of the image in Photoshop. I was fairly knowledgeable about Photoshop before reading this book, but Mr. Ang has taken me to a whole new level with his expert detailing of the adjustments you can make in Photoshop. Adjusting the curves was an area that eluded me before but now I am able to accurately adjust my images in order to gain the best tonal quality. This is especially import for my larger size prints.

Scrapbooking the Digital Way is a new book just out from JASC, the makers of Paint Shop Pro software ( a nice alternate to the higher priced Photoshop). Michelle Shefveland takes you through the creation of layers and imge editing tasks that you need to become good at scrapbooking. She offers inshgtful guidance ein how to reapir damged images as well as tinting balck and white photos.

She also show the scrapbooker how to embellish their photos (not with expensive decorations) with digital means. This means you can do some pretty creative things in your scrapbooks without breaking the bank.

There are useful tips and tricks for the beginning scrapbooker but the more advanced will also find innovative ideas to use in their projects.

Customer Review: New to the world of DSLR, I now have the confidence to switch off the auto and go to manual. This book explains - in easy to understand terms - how to set your exposure for a wide variety of conditions. Its well written and has plenty of good examples showing 'with' & 'without'.

Digital Photography for Dummies, Fourth Edition
by Julie Adair King; Price: $15.74 (37% off)
Customer Review: Basic digital photography can be learned from this book. But there are too many pages of fluff and filler. More space is devoted to the value of using a tripod than making the most of basic camera functions.

Book devotes a lot of space to using Photoshop Elements for editing. Valuable if you happen to buy that product. Prod... [read more]
